DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

Hello,

I'm having a very hard time to get GRE running. I read the manual "Granular Recovery Extension User Guide for Microsoft SharePoint Server, Exchange and VMware", but from my point of view it's hard to follow the steps. And there is nothing in it at all about the configuration for vCenter Appliance (VCSA).

- DP 9.04 Windows Cell Manager VM with VMware Integration installed - Host A

- DP 9.04 Windows Media Agent (DL580G7, we need this for library/tape connection), with installed GRE Extension Host B

- VMware 6.0U1 VCSA vCenter - Host C

In the DP GUI I've checked the box "Advanced GRE Web Plug-in" on the VCSA Login page.  In the Web Client I already see a new "HP Data Protector" tab with some options. But it only displays "Loading" in the main window. My User in vCenter has full admin rights in DP. It also asks for a Cell Manger and chooses the right one by default. But after that I can not do anything.

I'm really confused about what I've to add to which client. Especially the firwall rules and the settings for encryped control communication (which we are using).

On each client with the VMware GRE agent installed, implement the following:
a.
Create a new file called config in the following path:Windows systems: Data_Protector_program_data\Config\Server\ and set encoding to UCS-2 Little Endian. UNIX systems: /etc/opt/omni/server and create an ordinary (ascii) file.
b.
For each vCenter Server system add an entry one after another in the config file. For example:
<vcenter1.company.com>={ encryption={ exception=1; }; }; <vcenter2.company.com>={ encryption={ exception=1; }; };
Here <vcenter.company.com> is the host where the plug-in is installed, and uses the VMware GRE agent.

I've installed the GRE Agent (Extension?) on the Media Agent, there is no directoryData_Protector_program_data\Config\Server\ only Data_Protector_program_data\Config\Client

Can please someone post a step by step guide on how to setup VMware GRE with DP 9.04 and VMware VCSA?

Hi,

Recall similar issues and they were generally related to host resolving. I created a case some time ago and it was related to localhost resolving. We did some debugging on the "virgo.log" of the VMware GRE agent and it reported.

host resolved to loopback; server canonical name is vcsa

I removed the loopback and entered the IP of the vcsa ( hostname ) in the /etc/hosts. I had this issue with vSphere 5.5. I've had couple of issues on non VCSA's which we're DNS related.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

With GRE Agent you mean the VCSA? I cannnot find any logfile entry with loopback in it. VCSA has two /etc/hosts entries.

127.0.0.1 localhost

x.x.x.x  vcsa_fqdn vcsa_shortname

From my experience with linux, I'd not remove the localhost entry. Still wonderinge if HP is able to deliver a working and understandable documentation.

About encrypted control communication configuration: on client there is no Config\Server directory. You need to create it to put the file in it.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

No matter what I try, I always get "Loading..." See attached image.

I'm also getting the feeling the the manual that I have here (which is from the Program Files\OmniBack\Docs directory on the 9.04 Cell Manger) is outdated. The Screenshots do not match what I see in Web Client.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

Can you try this quick and post the results:

After the installation, enable all firewall ports in VCSA, else VMWARE GRE will not work:
iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
iptables -F

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

In General GRE Configuration:
----------------
Nodes:
Sys1: CM
Sys2: BH+ GRE Agent
Sys3: VC/VCSA
(Add host entries in hosts files in all machines
& make sure firewall ports are enabled or firewall is disabled completely
& make sure hosts are resolvable)

- Install DP CM Sys1
- Add Sys2 as client with DA+MA
- Push Install VE Integration Agent to Sys2
- Push Install VMWare GRE Agent to Mount Proxy to Sys2
- Import Sys3 VCSA as VCenter with selecting "Advanced GRE WebPlugin"
    (you can log in to VCenter MOB and check its showing the "HP GRE DataProtector Plugin")

- Log in to VCenter Web Client and traverse to HP DataProtector Plugin tab.
- Click on the tab, you will be automatically taken to the CM if GRE is only for one CM. Else you have to select one.
- Go to Settings tab and add one MountProxy path.
- Go to Requests tab and other tabs as required and given in docs and proceed with GRE.

Note: Dont forget to do the firewall enable in VCSA as said in previous post.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

Hi,

I've removed all firewall rules and I think I've also done all other steps. I see the Plugin in the Plugin list in vCSA and when I navigate to a VM I see the new HP Data Protector tab and some content in the tab area. But I can not start any action there, I always get "Loading..." (see attached screenshots). Are there any debug or log files I can check.

# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain inbound (0 references)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain port_filter (0 references)
target     prot opt source               destination

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

In VCSA, You can check the log: /var/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/vsphere_client_virgo.log

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

As nigil said, post the *virgo.log. I suspect traffic on the needed ports (15000-15900) being dropped.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

I have to setup Vmware 5.5 environment. I was going through documents, but this summary was very useful.

Also, you can try the 9.05 patch.

Re: DP 9.04 + vCenter Appliance 6.0U1 + VMware GRE Documentation needed

Hello,

I had the same issue.

Problem solved after adding rule:
{
"direction": "inbound",
"name": "AppServer",
"port": "7116",
"porttype": "dst",
"protocol": "tcp"
},
{
"direction": "inbound",
"name": "GRE",
"port": "15000:15999",
"porttype": "dst",
"protocol": "tcp"
}

And restarting Vcenter.

Thank a lot for this tip. There already solved my problem.

I have VCSA 6.0 and DP 9.05
