How can I configure a report without SMTP relay?

Jump to solution

Hello guys,
I am used to configuring Data Protector reports through a server that has the active SMTP relay.
However I am on a client that has no way to configure the relay.

Is it possible to configure the mail server, port and password? This is an external mailbox.

How do I configure? This is version 10.4 of the Data Protector.

Thank you.

Hello MFranca86,

Looks like is possible, please refer to E-mail send method on this link: https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Data_Protector:10.04/Use/Monitor/Description/DES_About_Reporting#ReportsSendMethods

You can found the steps to use E-Mail not SMTP.

Please note the warning:

Important Due to security features of Microsoft Outlook, using the e-mail send method may cause the CRS service to stop responding. Alternatively, use e-mail (SMTP) as the e-mail send method.

Re: How can I configure a report without SMTP relay?

Thanks for help.

After setting up the email account in outlook (I used IMAP) with the "omniback" account, I get the following error:

[12:5107] Error sending e-mail: MAPILogon failed.
Micro Focus Data Protector was unable to send e-mail because MAPILogon call returned error.

Micro Focus Data Protector needs a MAPI profile named OmniBack
in order to send e-mail notification.

Check if OmniBack profile exists on the Cell Manager that
tried to send e-mail. The profile should be configured for the user
under which account the CRS service is running.

The account created in Outlook is with the OmniBack name.

Hi @MFranca86,

Don't use the Outlook MAPI function. If this is a Windows Cell Manager, you can configure the Windows SMTP service as the SMTP relay with authenticiation. Configure Data Protector to send to the locally installed SMTP relay without authentication and restrict possible senders to localhost.

If this is Linux or HP-UX you can do the same with Postfix, Sendmail, Exim or whatever SMTP daemon you prefer.

Why do not use Outlook MAPI function? We have some problems to install the SMTP service.

Thanks.

Hi @MFranca86,

To make Outlook MAPI work you need to install Microsoft Outlook on the Cell Manager. Not sure if this is a better choice.

We did the install but I have the following problem now:

Hi @MFranca86,

I'm not sure if this was tested with a modern Outlook versions. The last time I used it was with Outlook 2000. and Data Protector 6.1. Which Windows and Outlook version are you using? It might be a good idea to talk to support.

Hi @MFranca86,

I've created a small lab for this with Outlook 2010. Created a OmniBack profile with the user that runs the CRS process on Cell Manager. I'm seeing the same kind of error.

From the debugs I can see that the library is loaded but it fails to open the profile. I still think this is a compatibility issue. Will look at the CRS debugs, but I think this is something for support.

My fault, I've marked the wrong solution. The solution was to create the SMTP service in the cell manager as our friend taught.
