Backup up your data to the cloud with Micro Focus Data Protection

Cloud storage solutions such as Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure are giving organizations access to flexible and low-cost data storage. Integrating these services with an enterprise backup solution provides an alternative to utilizing tape to retain backup data off-site, which is critical to any disaster recovery plan.

However, there have been limitations in using these services for backing up and recovering data, especially for large enterprises with complex environments. Two key issues are speed and cost. It can take an unacceptable amount of time to upload data to cloud storage solutions for safekeeping, unless organizations are prepared to spend heavily on network capacity. It can also take too long to download data when it’s needed to restore a failed system the organization depends on for its day-to-day operations.

Data Protection supports three types of cloud integrations: native integrations, cloud gateways and backup appliances.

Data Protection features native integration to the Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Scality, and Ceph cloud storage solutions. All data exchanged with or stored within these services is compressed and encrypted for efficiency and security. Any media server can act as a gateway to the supported cloud services. This means administrators can use the cloud storage just like any other backup target.

Administrators can also access cloud storage services through gateway appliances such as AWS VTL Storage Gateway and Microsoft Azure StorSimple, and control the backup and restore process directly from the Data Protection user interface. This can be preferable for larger data sets since these dedicated appliances provide additional caching capacity and enable users to further optimize when and how data is moved to the cloud.

Data Protection also supports backup appliance cloud integrations from HPE and Dell EMC. The appliance features of HPE StoreOnce Cloud Bank Storage and Dell EMC Data Domain Cloud Tier make data transfer between HPE StoreOnce and Dell EMC Data Domain systems and cloud services significantly more efficient and reduces the storage footprint--thanks to their built-in deduplication technology. 

An extension of HPE StoreOnce Catalyst technology, HPE Cloud Bank Storage, is supported with Data Protection out of the box, without the need for plug-ins. By pairing Data Protection with Cloud Bank Storage together, users can transfer backup data (in the form of object copies) seamlessly between on-premises storage systems and cloud targets. With Dell EMC Data Domain Cloud Tier, data is natively tiered to the public, private or hybrid cloud for long-term retention. Only unique data is sent directly from Data Domain to the cloud. With deduplication, the storage footprint is greatly reduced for cost-effective long-term retention in the cloud. This process is done by internal appliance policies, not controlled, and therefore transparent to Data Protector.

Configuring native integration with Amazon S3

Data Protection’s most recent cloud integration was announced with Data Protector 10.03, which supports Amazon S3 and compatible variants such as Ceph and Scality. A cloud device is used to enable direct backup and object copy to Amazon S3 object storage from Data Protection. The following are prerequisites to configuring the S3 cloud device:

  • A valid Amazon S3 storage account and corresponding access keys (Access Key ID & Secret Access Key).
  • The system time must be set accurately to ensure proper synchronization between the media server and Amazon S3.
  • Data Protector Media Agent installed on supported Windows or Linux systems that will become Amazon S3 gateways.

To create the cloud device, perform the following steps:

  1. Launch the Data Protector Manager GUI
  2. Select the “Device” context
  3. Right-click “Devices” and select Add Device.

a) Enter a device name.
b) Set the “Device Type” to Backup to Disk.
c) Set the “Interface Type” to Cloud (Amazon S3 API compatible target).

d) Click Next.
e) Set the “S3 Target Type” to AWS S3.
f) Set the “S3 Region.”
g) Enter “Access Key ID” and “Secret Access Key.”
h) Click Select / Create Bucket.
i) Select desired gateway server from dropdown list and click Add.

 After the cloud device is created, it can then be used as a valid target for any backup specification or object copy operation.
