The Intelligent Scheduler

The Intelligent Scheduler

One of the many benefits of Data Center Automation (DCA) is that, at an enterprise scale, it enables you to integrate with existing infrastructure and perform policy based automated compliance and patching. This includes high efficiency scan and remediation capability. One of the most salient features of this arrangement is the intelligent scheduler.

Here’s an example.

Database and server administrators often have a tough time coordinating with teams for setting up compliance and patch jobs. In some organisations, this is a manual process. The administrators have to coordinate with the teams and send requests to countless resource owners. When they finally get a slot, they manually create the scan and remediation job schedules across thousands of servers.
Needless to say this process increases complexity and consumes a lot of time. DCA brings in automation and simplifies this process with Role-based access control (RBAC), Service level objective (SLO), and Maintenance windows.

In DCA, RBAC gives the risk and compliance managers required privileges to author policies with SLOs, specifying the frequency of scans, and remediation for resources in the data center. RBAC also facilitates granular access control and gives resource owners the privilege to define their own maintenance windows against resource groups.

As the risk and compliance managers are creating policies and defining SLOs and the resource owners are defining the maintenance windows independently, DCA is bringing everything together behind the scenes. With both the SLO and maintenance window defined, DCA scheduler simply fetches the details and creates an auto-generated job schedule. It also checks for dependencies, job priorities – for example, which jobs are running and which ones need to run first to maintain SLOs and so on, while generating this schedule.

As compliance managers and resource group owners make changes to policy and maintenance windows, DCA automatically creates new job schedules.

To summarize, the intelligent scheduler in DCA creates the schedule the moment the SLO and maintenance windows are defined. This definitely minimizes errors and saves a lot of manual effort and time.

Here’s a video that demonstrates how DCA’s intelligent scheduler works.
